Minnesota Youth Show Goat Circuit (MYSGC)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS as of 3/24/16
Q: What is the MYSGC?
A: MYSGC is Minnesota's first youth show goat circuit! The purpose of this circuit is to promote an environment to allow young meat goat exhibitors to participate in a competitive yet ethical show series in order to develop their showmanship and meat goat management skills while earning points by their show ring performance.
Q: Is the MYSGC a 4-H or FFA program?
A: While the MYSGC is an ardent supporter of the 4-H and FFA youth programs, the MYSGC is an independent organization not affiliated with Minnesota 4-H or FFA. MYSGC members are encouraged to participate in these fine youth organizations.
Q: When can I join the MYSGC?
A: Members are encouraged to register by MAY 15, 2016 for the cheapest entry fee. Individual or families can register after MAY 15, 2016 , however the entry fee will increase. See http://www.minnesotayouthshowgoatcircuit.org/rules.html for the registration form.
Q: What kinds of goats can I show to earn points in the MYSGC?
A: The MYSGC will track member’s meat goat performance at sanctioned market goat shows. These goats can be meat goat market wethers AND meat goat market does. Class placing of breeding female and DAIRY meat goats exhibited by youth will NOT be considered in the 2015 competitive year.
Q: What animal identification forms need to be submitted in order to participate in the MYSGC?
A: NO IDENTIFICATION IS REQUIRED for any market meat goat to participate in the MYSGC. Please follow specific identification requirements for each show (if any). Members of 4-H and FFA are advised to follow each organization’s identification requirements if the animal is expected to show in 4-H or FFA.
Q: What are the age requirements for the meat show goats?
A: Consult with the rules of individual shows.
Q: Can family members share the same market show goat over the season?
A: There are no rules from the MYSGC that would restrict this however 4-H or FFA rules may prohibit this. Please consult you local county 4-H office or FFA chapter advisor for specifics. Generally, individual meat goat shows only permit an animal to be shown only once for the specific show.
Q: Can family members share the same market show goat at the same show?
A: It is permitted that an animal can be shown by one family member at one show and then another family member at another show. But family members can not share the goat at the same show. For example: A goat places first in a class and is shown by one member of the family and then is shown in the champion drive by another. The youth showing the animal in the original class will be awarded the points. If a youth has more than one animal in the champion drive another youth may show the animal.
UPDATE: If it is desired that the animal is entered in the show under a farm name, a participating youth’s name must be registered with the animal and the farm name at that show. Example: Lee High Acres - Bobby Lee.
Q: What happens when I have two goats in the same class?
A: It is not uncommon to have two goats in the same class because goats usually come from the same farm and each show will divide the classes based on the weight range of goats present that day. Plus, if you are fortunate you may have more than one goat in the final drive for champion. The spirit of the MYSGC is to track the performance of a young person with his/her goats. Not just the performance of the youth or not just the performance of the goat.
The youth must be in the show ring with a goat in the same class as with the second goat. The second goat in the class can be shown by anyone the youth asks. No points will be awarded if the youth is not present at the show. No points are awarded if a single goat owned by the youth is in a class and not shown by the youth. No points are awarded to the youth who has been asked to show another youth's goat due to the owner having multiple entries in a class or drive.
Q: How will the MYSGC know how I performed at a show?
A: MYSGC points will only be counted at specific sanctioned meat goat shows. Please see the MYSGC web site (www.minnesotayouthshowgoatcircuit.org) for a current listing of sanctioned shows. MYSGC officials will work with individual shows to record placings of member’s goats. All places as recorded at individual shows are final.
Q: Are points awarded on a sliding scale based on the number in a class?
A: For 2016 the point scale is fixed. Scoring is based on placing regardless of class sizes. The selected “ Sanctioned" shows for 2016 was based on a reputation of having large enough classes for MYSGC purposes. See http://www.minnesotayouthshowgoatcircuit.org/rules.html for the scoring scale.
Q: How many sanctioned shows do I need to participate in order to win awards?
A: The point chase is based on the best performance of two of the member’s market show goats at any given sanctions market goat show. A member can show as many goats as the individual show permits but points are captured based on the best performance of two market show goats exhibited by a member. Points for these two placings will be added together for the member’s show score. Members can attend as many sanctioned shows as desired but the top FIVE show scores will be added together for the member’s 2016 total score.
Q: How do I register to show at any of the sanctioned meat goat market shows?
A: Please register as per the registration requirements of each show. The MYSGC has made attempts to present the most current information regarding the identified sanctioned shows at http://www.minnesotayouthshowgoatcircuit.org/shows.html however information posted at the MYSGC web site does not supersede any changes of dates or other relevant information of individual shows.
Q: Will the MYSGC be awarding awards for the best market wether, the best market doe in each age division?
A: No. Member’s points will be accrued regardless of what kind of market goat is shown during the 2016 season. In the 2016 season, dairy market goat placings will not be tallied.
Q: When will the awards be presented?
A: MYSGC will have a awards night at a location to be determined. Please check back to the web site often for updates.
Q: What if my question has not been address in the MYSGC FAQ?
A: If you have any questions, please send your question via the contact page after reading all available information posted on the MYSGC web site. Please go to http://www.minnesotayouthshowgoatcircuit.org/contact.html to submit your questions.
